Complete: 18. Make bottle cap magnets + 63. Take a dance class with Garrett

Two for you this week, despite being on Christmas vacation!

Bottle cap magnets were kind of intimidating because I needed to use resin to make them. I ordered the resin months ago and finally the pressure of the deadline helped me work up the courage to do it. I poured sprinkles and seed beads in the bottom of the bottle caps, mixed up my resin, and poured it on top. You have to let resin cure, so I left it all alone for 48 hours, then added felt to the seed bead ones to make mini pies. The sprinkles I left bare. I think they turned out pretty cute! Resin is still a little scary (I ruined a paintbrush), but this did make me want to experiment with it more. I want to preserve more tiny things.

G and I started taking square dancing lessons because it's one of the few fun things we could find to do in town. Luckily they coincided with my goal! We started in September, and we're still not officially done, but since we've been going a while and we're on Christmas break, I am declaring it good enough! We've learned lots of moves, but haven't attended an actual dance yet. Once they graduate us, I think we'll know enough to attend. We only have a few weeks left.

Hope you all had a good Christmas!

8 days left and only a few more goals needed to break my Redux record!

Complete: 3. Watch 50+ episodes of Good Eats and cook 25+ corresponding recipes + 6. Send calligraphy birthday cards to family and friends for one year + 47. Send a Christmas newsletter each year + 101. Watch all of the Yakitate!! Japan anime with Garrett and re-create a bread from the show

4 down this week! That puts me past the total for the 1st 101 list, and I'm creeping up on the 2nd. I am definitely going to do better than the 2nd one, and that's all the progress I could have hoped for.

Okay. Good Eats is such a great show that I wanted to watch more of. This is one I've been working on for a while, but I'm glad I left some to the end, as Alton launched Good Eats Reloaded this fall so I could see some new content, as well. Some of his recipes were amazing, and some were not so much. Alton also seems notorious for making things very complicated sometimes.

Favorites were edamame dip, ginger almonds, avocado ice cream, lemon curd, bruleed grapefruit, praline bacon, refresco de avena, garlic parmesan mashed potatoes, chipotle smashed sweet potatoes, and carrot slaw. Yum!

Calligraphy cards replaced sending photo thank yous, which was a great idea, but hard to make myself stick to. I tried to take pictures of the cards, but before I knew it I was licking the envelope and sealing it, so I don't have much photographic proof, hahaha. I sent 21 cards this year. :) I'm not sure if family appreciated them or not, as I only heard from like, 4 of them that they'd been received and enjoyed. Oh well!

I just wrapped up sending out our Christmas newsletter for this year (though if you still want one let me know), and I sent them out for both 2016 and 2017. I love this tradition - it's fun to tell everyone what we've been up to, and what we've enjoyed throughout the year. I will definitely keep this up. Someone was asking us about our Christmas traditions the other day, and I guess this is one of them!

Last, Yakitate!! Japan - I'm glad Garrett has seen it all now, but I realize in re-watching that it isn't as good as I remember. It drags on a bit, and poor Kawachi - though that's the same feeling as reading the manga, hahaha. Garrett did appreciate all the puns.

I decided to make Azuma's melon sushi bread, because it always looked so delicious, and I love melon. Melon pan is a sweet roll encased in cookie dough, kind of similar to conchas, if you know them. The problem that Azuma seeks to fix is that the bread and cookie dough cook at different rates, so you'll never have a perfectly cooked one - one part will be undercooked or overcooked to have the corresponding portion cooked correctly. His solution is to cook the bread and cookie separately, then combine them with a melon cream like wasabi is used in nigiri sushi.

So I found a decently reviewed melon pan recipe and cooked the portions separately. I was thinking if I pulled the cookies out and immediately let them cool on the rolls they would form to their shape, but that was a grave miscalculation. I looked as Azuma's bread again and decided to crumble the cookies to get the more crunchy looking top that he has. I made whipped cream and added honeydew syrup and bit of green food coloring to get the right look.

I think it turned out pretty okay! The cream could maybe be a bit more green. It was super delicious, too. Heck, Azuma. You make me want to try to make more of your breads!

Complete: 32. French "Fryday" blogposts for 3 months + 43. Read a biography of each President of the church + 55. No complaining for 1 week

Heck y'all! 3 more done this week!

If you follow me on instagram, you've seen my #frenchfryday posts. It has been glorious to have a reason to go eat fries, let me tell you. I wanted to do a more in depth analysis and scoring system, but it just wasn't going to happen. Maybe in the future! I also want to do a frozen fry cookoff and find the best frozen brands, hahaha.
Best fries of the project were the nori fries from Katsu Burger in Seattle, the monster fries from EZ's Wenatchee, and the fresh fries we got from local potatoes (I assume?) at our agricultural parade.

I have read 17 biographies of presidents of the church. Some were really good, but some fall into the trap of not trying to be good books because they know they're going to sell no matter what.  I suffered through some pretty mediocre writing, as well as some pretty prophet-worshippy books. I liked the ones that actually treated them like human beings better. It's more interesting to read about their humanity than to pretend they can't do any wrong. I was reading backwards in time, hoping to finish on Joseph Smith, but I had to add Russell M. Nelson in last minute. His book was a bit outdated, as quite a bit has happened since it was written, but it's the only one that's been published. It was very long and not always about him? It was also poorly organized - they jumped around in time instead of telling everything chronologically, which is weird for a biography.
My favorites I read were No Man Knows My History (I know, I know - anti-TCoJCoLDS lit), Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, and David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism. They felt more complete than others (*cough* published by Deseret Book).

I decided to change my no complaining week to a month of positive self-talk. I read What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter and decided being nicer to myself might be better than beating myself up for a weak when I slipped up and complained. I think overall, this was much better for me to do. I found a positive self-talk video on youtube and just made sure to play it everyday for the 30 days. Mr. Helmstetter says it doesn't even matter if you listen to it with your full attention - as long as it's playing it will help. It seems kind of hokey, but I think it did help me have  a better attitude, and really helped me focus on working hard as I wind up my list. Now that I'm finished with it, I kind of miss hearing it. I might just have to start it again tomorrow.  :)

Welp, that brings me up to 67 items done! I am almost on par with my first 101 list, and hopefully I will soon surpass 101 List Redux!

Complete: 2. Read all of the Yakitate!! Japan manga in Japanese + 14. Read the complete works of Shakespeare

Two big ones complete this week! I've been working on both of these for quite some time.

Yakitate!! Japan is one of my favorite anime series, and I started buying the manga of it when I was in Japan (aka forever ago). I finished up my collection at Book Off in San Diego and by ordering a few off Amazon. I wanted to actually read all of them, because I knew the manga went a little further than the anime did, and it would be a great way to practice my Japanese, though my vocab is very food focused now, haha.

This is the story of Azuma Kazuma, a young boy who is on a mission to create a bread the the Japanese people love as much as they love rice. He begins working for Japan's top bakery and competes in their newcomer's bread tournament. He then competes in a world tournament, and goes on to compete on a Japanese bread competition show. All along the way, people have crazy reactions to his bread because they're so good. The reactions are a bit better in animation, but still funny in print. The reactions get crazy in the manga, though. We go from someone having visions of curry oceans in the first volume all the way to someone literally turning into a turtle. As the series progresses, the reactions seem to last longer, as well, and I became concerned at their lack of concern for human life. One baker Azuma competes against becomes a dam, and he is never mentioned again. We can only assume he is a permanent feature in that lake now.

The ending is a bit more dramatic in the manga, as well. Spoilers obviously follow if you'll ever read it yourself (they did translate it all in English, but I think it's out of print now). In the show, it culminates with Azuma battling his inspiration to enter into baking - a previously good-hearted man who taught young Azuma to make bread with soymilk, now head of the competing bakery and very evil. In the manga, this confrontation happens, as well, but it has been discovered that this man was taken over by aliens, I think, and is now a bread-creature. Azuma is basically fighting a giant bread mech in the end. Don't worry - he creates a bread that allows Kawachi to turn into Chopin (the composer) and defeat him. But that's not the end! After this dramatic battle, it becomes Azuma's task to solve global warming. I kid you not. He ends up creating a bread that allows Kawachi to make all of the earth parts of the globe hover over the oceans, so he doesn't really solve global warming, but he does remove the danger of floods as the ice caps melt.

I wasn't looking up any words as I read (it would have taken too long), so my translation may be off on some of that, but heck. It just got more and more ridiculous. And I felt more and more bad for Kawachi - not only is he the brunt of many reactions, but he ends up living as a video game villain for the rest of his days, while Azuma gets a peace prize and everyone else lives happily. Man.

Anyway, I'm glad I've read the whole series now. I'm probably getting rid of it all now because I don't think I'll be reading it again (and the manga was a bit less woman-friendly than the series), but it was a fun trip.

Shakespeare! This has already been a wordy post, so thanks for reading this far. I love seeing Shakespearean plays performed, and I wanted to read all of them! I didn't include the plays of questionable origin (Two Noble Kinsmen, etc.), and I didn't read the entirety of his poems, but I read all of the sonnets, plus a few of the poems included in the anthology I read. Did you know the majority of the sonnets were written to a man?? I had no idea. I can't believe I called myself a Shakespeare fan. But now I am one, no question!

Perennial favorites (aka I already knew I loved these):
Titus Andronicus
The Winter's Tale
As You Like It
Much Ado About Nothing
Macbeth
Romeo and Juliet
Merry Wives of Windsor
Richard III
Henry V
Richard II
Julius Caesar
Hamlet
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Twelfth Night
King Lear

Hidden Gems:
Pericles
Cymbeline
Henry VI, Parts 2 + 3
Coriolanus
The Merchant of Venice (Portia for life!)

No thank you:
Troilus and Cressida
The Two Gentlemen of Verona
The Taming of the Shrew (as written - I did see a modern performance with a feminist bent and that was alright)

Meh:
All's Well That Ends Well
Measure for Measure
Love's Labor's Lost
Timon of Athens
Othello
Antony and Cleopatra
Henry VIII
Henry VI, Part 1
Henry IV, Parts 1 + 2
King John
The Comedy of Errors
The Tempest

Those hidden gems made the whole read-through worth it. They aren't performed as often, so it was good to encounter them in the only way I could (though I did see The Merchant of Venice performed during the list!). I will definitely be watching out for performances of them, though it might take me a lifetime to track them all down.

Complete: 73. Create a map of my heart + 89. Create pie charts made of pie + 100. Host a Miracle Berry party

Thanksgiving break gave me ample time and friend assistance to complete 3 goals!

First, my heat map. I don't know if I'm completely satisfied with it, but I love what I've come up with:

I wanted to put some things in the scallops on the edges, too, but I didn't have enough short things. I may revisit this.

Next, as you may have seen on the FB, the pie chart of pies:

What a delicious mess we made.

And finally, we had a miracle berry brunch after Friendsgiving:

Miracle berries make sour things taste sweet, so we assembled the sourest smorgasbord we could find. The best things were definitely the citrus - kumquats, lemons, and limes, especially, but it was so fun to try everything! They sell miracle berry tablets on Amazon - I definitely recommend it for a fun activity.

Complete: 40. Find my scent + 95. Take a local cooking class

My stepmom believes everyone should have a scent. Her mother wore Red Door, and she wears Lulu, which I think they actually quit making, but she stockpiled it. Grandma gave me Red Door for Christmas one year, but I couldn't wear it - it smelled too much like her. I couldn't take it for myself. I like the idea of having a scent of my own, but ultimately, I haven't been able to decide on anything. I don't know if it's in the cards for me to have just one scent, so what I did do is collect a bunch that I do like!

I found this company - Demeter Fragrance Library - and they have great, unique scents. I got thunderstorm, cedar, lilac, chai tea, Fraser fir, pistachio ice cream, dandelion, honeysuckle, watermelon lollipop, mojito, and saltwater taffy came as a free gift for spending lots of money, hahaha.

My favorites are watermelon lollipop - it smells just like watermelon candy, honeysuckle - such a nostalgic scent for me; it reminds me of picking honeysuckle in GA as a kid and sucking out the nectar, and dandelion - I don't know how they did it, but it smells just like a dandelion. I love that scents can just bring back a memory or help me recharge and focus.

I'm looking forward to using these ones up and then I can get more! They have more crazy scents that I need to try.

I also completed my local cooking class, but by local, I mean I had to drive an hour and a half away for it, since I live in the middle of nowhere now. I wish I had done this one when we were still in Utah, but I didn't know how good I had it there.

I looked for a community ed class and found a hot pot class through Kennewick Continuing Education. It was taught by a cute, old Taiwanese woman who didn't really act like she knew what she was doing? But we basically got to eat all the hot pot we wanted, so I was okay with it in the end.

I have an induction burner and I've always wanted to try hot pot, so now I feel fairly confident I can pull it off. She did show us some ingredients and their packaging which was helpful for me. I can handle the Japanese section of the Asian stores, but the Chinese has always been a bit mystifying. I'll be trying it myself soon!

Complete: 53. Get a massage

So I actually had 4 done last week! But I forgot to blog about this one in all the excitement. Which is a good thing because I didn't get another one done this week. Happy accident!

I did get a lot done this week, though, and I realized I'm on track to get 82 things done!!! And that's even if I ignore the ones that have been staring at me, stressing me out. So I'm going to ignore them, and still get a new record. Heck. My substitutions have helped, so I'm just gonna lean into that, and I highly recommend it for you other 101ers.

Also I launched my survey for my pie pie chart, so if you haven't taken it already, please do!

Okay, so the massage. I've never had one before, and I've always wanted to give it a try. So I did! I think I've always been hesitant because I thought it would be awkward, and it kind of was? But also not too bad. It felt super nice and was pretty relaxing! I think I would do it again, but maybe only if I really felt like I needed one? The downside is they are pretty expensive.

But overall it was good! 57 items done!

Complete: 17. Play 10+ Spiel des Jahres or Kennerspiel award winning games + 34. Pierogi making party! + 64. Buy 5 new dresses that I love

This week was all sorts of productive, thanks mostly to Jeska, my friend who lives sort of nearby.

She and her husband got 2 Spiel des Jahres games which we played this weekend, so now I have played 10 new ones!

  1. Codenames
  2. Enchanted Forest
  3. Istanbul
  4. Tikal
  5. Scotland Yard
  6. Broom Service
  7. Legends of Andor
  8. Ghost Fightin' Treasure Hunters (in the form of Ghostbusters: Protect the Barrier)
  9. Azul
  10. Kingdomino
I liked them all except for Tikal and Legends of Andor. Enchanted Forest was also a bit meh. The rest I liked a lot, but favorites were Istanbul and Broom Service.

We also had a pierogi making party, as it's a lot of work for one person. I attempted gluten-free ones and they turned out pretty good! Jeska even said she preferred my dough to her glutenous one. She had some blue potatoes, so we used those for the filling and they turned out a lovely lavender color. So delightful! But so many pierogies, hahaha (that's also why we made it a party).

And finally, I have purchased the last dress, though it actually ended up being a skirt. But hear me out!

We were at Target over the course of our time together and Jeska was showing me the cute purses and accessories they have in the girls section (cake purses! cat ears! sparkly snowflake headbands!), when I spied a glorious tulle skirt with shiny stars all over it. I lamented that they always make the cutest clothing for girls, but I had the urge to find the largest size and pull it off the rack. I tried it on and it totally fit. I found a perfect shirt to go with it, but I assumed the shirts couldn't possibly fit as well. How wrong I was! I am glad to tell you that I can fit into some XL girls' clothes:

I'm not thinking they would all fit - especially not their pants or dresses. And while I do love dresses, this skirt is just too glorious, and the revelation that I can shop at least a little in the girls' section is too marvelous to not include this in the list. Consider this one done!

Complete: 59. Visit a friend who lives far away

I'm wrapping up a visit to Georgia today, and while I didn't technically see any friends, I just spent 2 weeks with family I hardly ever get to see, so this is close enough. (Though I still would like to visit some faraway friends! [I'm realizing most of my friends are faraway now, though, and that's making me sad.]) Anyway!

Pictured is my big bro, Russell, who I visited, along with his wife and 4 kids.

We had a great week playing Rocket League, debating Schroedinger's astronaut, talking music, eating good food (Waffle House hashbrowns all the way!), and touring great Georgia places like Stone Mountain and the Georgia Aquarium.

I do consider my brother a friend. I have him to thank for some of my musical tastes - Weird Al and They Might Be Giants, in particular. He took me to my first concert (Weird Al) when I was 11 and it was the best thing. We're planning on applying for The Amazing Race together (I'm holding you to it, Russell, if you ever read this). We don't talk as much as I would like, so I'm glad I get to go visit every few years, at least.

Complete: 51. Learn 5+ songs on ukulele

Hello from Georgia!

I'm currently away from my uke, but I've learned 5 songs! I decided not to worry about memorizing them, but I'm building my repertoire, which is the point. I should get a binder and print things out and keep them handy. If you're ever near me, ask me for a concert!

1. Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure by The Weakerthans
2. Tonight You Belong to Me as made famous by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters
3. La Vie En Rose by Edith Piaf, as played on How I Met Your Mother
4. Two Bedroom Apartment by Danielle Ate The Sandwich
5. You and I by Ingrid Michaelson

Hopefully I'll have another item completed next week, but no guarantees since I'm technically on vacation. :)

This one has been a long time coming! I cooked my first international dish in May 2016, and my last dish yesterday. Complete: 96. Follow an apostle through their General Conferences

I started this list in a better place with church. I was optimistic and put 5 whole church-related goals on here. As time has gone on, I've found myself less motivated (you read about that, I hope) to complete these and I've actually ended up putting a little spin on a few of them (which you will probably hear about when I [hopefully] finish the rest of them) to make them more palatable.

For this goal, I picked my main man Dieter F. Uchtdorf, because he is only one I love enough to be able to do this for. (He also hasn't been in the Q12 as long as some of them, hahah).

Starting in October 1994, he has given 59 talks and I've read or watched them all. He mentioned airplanes 19 times, so that's a reference every 3.1 talks. I'm glad to finally have stats on that. :)

I love his perspective as someone who has come from outside the US, and especially as someone who had to flee his home and live as a refugee. I appreciate his empathy for those in the same situation now.

I was actually pretty crushed when he was released from the 1st Presidency, but he responded so gracefully (I'm just sad about who we have to listen to 3 times now...).

His focus on love and Christ is really one thing that is keeping me going to church. I felt like his most recent talk was especially relevant. I'm definitely feeling Weltschmerz, especially when it comes to church. I wish Uchtdorf's message was more

I hope I can continue to own my religious journey, determine what is best for me personally, and deepen my relationship with the Savior. I will definitely continue to look to my German Shepherd for guidance.

(Thanks for reading all my parentheses)

Complete: 65. Add pictures to our map for all western states

Okay, so I changed this one, too. We're going for adding pictures for 5+ new states. I really wanted to make it to New Mexico, but it didn't work out before our move, and I really wanted to make it to Montana now that we're so close, but alas. October is too busy and weather will only get worse from here, so I am calling it now.

During the course of the list, we got: Washington, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Florida, and Idaho - 6 new states!

I look forward to when our map is full of photos. It'll be a fun journey! :)

Complete: 42. Find the best waffle recipe [replaced] + 92. Catch up on Adventure Time

2 more! We're at 47 items complete. Moving right along!

I replaced the waffle recipe item. I've been avoiding gluten for health reasons and while finding an ultimate recipe really appealed to me, I couldn't decide on something else to replace waffles. Maybe I should have replaced it with finding the best non-waffle item you could make in a waffle iron, but I happened to find myself in possession of ~70 lbs. of apples this week and took the opportunity to do something else I've always wanted to do: learn to can.

Many thanks to my friend, Jeska, who has all the gear and guided me in our canning adventure. We ended up with 18 quarts of applesauce! I feel much less intimidated by canning now, but I don't know if I'll be doing it solo anytime soon, hahaha. It's also much easier to do with two people.

Catching up on Adventure Time: The series officially ended this month, and we were able to watch the final season this weekend (Thanks, Parker!!). It was so bittersweet, but I loved seeing how far the characters have come over the series. Especially seeing Finn go from solving all problems by fighting to trying to talk things out in the end. And wrapping it all up with music was so perfect. Oh, this show. I feel like I should have more things to say about it, but just know that I've enjoyed the storytelling, the characters, and everything. It's really such a great show.

I hear it's going to continue in comic form, too, so I won't have to say goodbye forever. :)

Okay! Blog complete! Off to work on more things!

Complete: 27. Keep a doodle journal for 3 months + 68. Have people over for dinner 10+ times

2 this week, woooo! And I'm officially calling 57. Take a road trip to Michigan my head shaving replace-ee. I still want to do it, but there's just no way I can make it out there before winter hits. So officially 3 goals! Getting stuff done!

27. Doodle journal:
This coincided nicely with my line drawing class online, so a lot of that, but also lots of lettering and cute things.

I discovered zentangles and started making my own Pokemon and Studio Ghibli themed ones. :)

68. Dinners with people!
I changed this to 5+ and I'm calling it good, because it's basically impossible to have people over for dinner here. I even counted cooking at other people's a few times, so we're just gonna be okay with that. I got 8 dinners. I don't think I got pictures of too many of these. Oh well! It's done!

This week I've also cooked a lot of Good Eats food and made a calligraphy birthday card. I keep forgetting to take pictures before I send them off - oh well. I'm making more progress on my grown-up coloring book because I switched from colored pencils to crayons. I don't think colored pencils and I are friends. I also switched French Fryday blog posts to being just instagram posts because that's easier and I may not evaluate the fries, just enjoy and post them. Making life easier!

I'm also buckling down and learning my songs for #49-51. Here's the first one, one take, no editing, sharing with you to hold myself accountable because it's not good enough for anything else, hahaha.

45 things done now! Maybe I can meet 80 after all (or not - that's totally okay)!

Complete: 94. Make 10+ new panna cotta recipes

Another one bites the dust!

1. Melon Tea panna cotta
2. Cinnamon panna cotta
3. Pumpkin panna cotta
4. Nutella panna cotta
5. Blackberry/blueberry panna cottas (which were mostly failures, but I tried so many times I'm counting it, dang it)
6. Mugicha (barley tea) panna cotta
7. Rosewater panna cotta
8. Almond panna cotta with cherry sauce

I finished out my panna cottas with the fanciest ones I've ever attempted (and thus the most photogenic):

9. Star-shaped furni (rosewater, cardamom, and pistachio) pannna cotta

10. Cereal milk panna cotta with mashed avocado and crispy cornflake topping (from Momofuku Milk Bar)

Panna cotta is pretty much my favorite dessert ever. If you've never made it, I really recommend trying, because it's also one of the easiest desserts to make. I recommend this recipe. What a great use of cream and gelatin.

Complete: 76. Crochet an amigurumi

Another one down! So far so good!

I've always wanted to make cute crochet animals, but I've always felt intimidated by it. I'm a knitter, for one, but I have a little bit of crochet experience.  Assembling things seemed tough, too. But once I sat down to it (and with the help of some good instructional videos), it wasn't too bad!

I made this cute guy:

And bonus, I made some blueberries!

I guess more complex ones would be tougher, and I know mine aren't perfect, but these were pretty fun! Perhaps I'll even make some more.

41 items complete!
